Our adventure begins in Puerto San Carlos, our base on the shores of the impressive Magdalena Bay. Each morning at sunrise, we embark on the journey out of the bay into the open ocean. We’ll keep our eyes out for the magnificent frigate birds flying overhead, and watch for them dramatically diving to the water’s surface to feed on sardine bait balls. This is our clue that the activity is close to the surface and that it is possible for us to dive in and witness an incredible predator/prey interaction. The bait balls act as one organism, and can be fast moving or completely static, often depending on the strategy and abundance of predators in their pursuit. We can witness amazing hunting techniques by marlin and mahi mahi, keeping up as best we can without inhibiting the action. This will often lead to multiple drops and quick returns back to the boat, making this arguably our most action-packed expedition.
The open ocean is unpredictable, and we often encounter dolphins, sea lions, and occasionally whales joining the fray. Besides the rich marine life, Magdalena Bay offers stunning views of sea lion colonies, amazing sea birds, lush mangroves, majestic sand dunes, and even coyotes, all of which enhance the diverse experience of our expedition.

The Striped Marlin (Kajikia audax), a pelagic billfish, migrates to Magdalena Bay annually, drawn by the abundant sardines. This creates a spectacular chance to watch marlins hunt. They skillfully corral sardines to the surface, forming tight bait balls. Each marlin then takes turns darting into the bait, using their bills to stun or spear fish before eating. During the hunt, marlins flash their vibrant stripes, a communication tool that adds to the mesmerizing display of natural behavior.
