Silky Shark Expedition

Swim with sharks in Baja California, Mexico

The southernmost point of the Baja Peninsula is a very special place.

This expedition is created to search for the summer silky shark aggregations. The silky sharks aggregate in large schools for mating off shore of Los Cabos during the month of July, this is an incredible sight to see, on the best days we are able to find schools of up to 50 sharks. Often we will see males and females together, with females showing clear mating scars. The shark will aggregate in different areas and we will mostly be searching off shore pinnacles and seamounts.

Silky Sharks are one of the most beautiful sharks to see, found in tropical - temperate waters worldwide.

Chumming with the Best of Them

During this expedition we will be out in the open ocean for about 8 hours per day, attempting to attract sharks at different locations. While the sharks are plentiful in the area they usually travel at depth, so we use chumming techniques to attract the sharks to the surface for our interaction. We will use non-invasive, environmentally-friendly shark attraction methods that have been developed for their efficiency and safety around the world. Once the sharks arrive, our safety guide will analyze their behavior and let us know when it's safe to slide in. During Silky mating season we can expect large numbers, anywhere from 1-100 sharks. The activity is all on the surface and safety is our main concern.

The sharks have distinct personalities and most often come in very close. When they first arrive they can be skittish and a bit imposing, but once they get used to us they are very curious and cooperative for an incredible encounter. Each day will be different, and your shark interaction will undoubtedly be something you will remember forever. Chumming can take some time and it is never a guarantee to see the animals. We will be sure to provide you with the best knowledge, techniques and opportunities to have a great encounter.

Shark snorkeling, when done correctly, is very safe. The Latitude team have many years experience with shark diving in Mexico.

Safety:

We follow high safety standards and all of our crew in well trained in first aid. You will receive an in-depth briefing before entering the water. We have never had any accidents and your safety is our main concern.

You will always have 2 safety divers with you. Our safety divers have up to 8 years experience with these sharks and have all been trained to handle pelagic sharks. We have an in-depth briefing and clear safety rules you must follow.

The safety divers will make decisions about the interactions on the day depending on the ocean conditions and the behaviour of the sharks. This is a safe activity and we are very vigilant about any adverse behaviour. All divers must wear full, dark colored wetsuits. We do not hand feed sharks.
